Stockholm

Stockholm is one of Europe’s most beautiful and cosmopolitan cities. It offers a rich and exciting cultural life which includes over 100 museums and numerous theaters such as the Royal Opera and Ballet as well as the world-class collection of art in the National Gallery, also home to one of the greatest and most famous collections of drawings and prints in the world (freely and directly accessible to students for study). Recently, the US magazine, Reader’s Digest, rated Stockholm as the world’s greenest, and most livable city and National Geographic Traveler magazine named Stockholm’s old town (Gamla Stan) as one of the world’s 10 most authentic and well-managed historic tourist destinations.

Stockholm is unique in that it is an archipelago consisting of around 24,000 islands, which has earned it the appropriate title — “The Venice of the North.” The city is wonderfully integrated into the beautiful surrounding countryside of rolling hills, forests, lakes and fields (frequently dotted with ancient rune-carved standing stones) all of which are bathed in our famous Scandinavian light. There are few places in Europe, if any, where the scenery is as unspoiled as it is in Sweden.

Besides walking, transportation within the city is quite convenient either by bus or subway, both of which are very safe, efficient and easy to use. There are also designated bicycle lanes throughout the city. Trains run to and from the city and the Stockholm airport (Arlanda) is a major hub, which offers easy access to Europe’s cities and attractions.

Along with Swedish, English is the other official language of Sweden so there is no communication barrier at all to English speakers.
